Emergency roof leak repair
Active water coming in now
A chimney can let water in without the roof being involved at all. A cracked crown, a missing cap, spalled brick or eroded mortar joints all admit water into the stack, where it travels down and appears inside looking exactly like a roof leak. Because the symptom is identical, chimneys are a common source of leaks that have been repaired at roof level more than once without success.
Duarte has a roofing climate most of the country would not recognise: months of relentless UV with almost no rain, then the year's water arriving in a handful of concentrated winter storms. That pattern is harder on a roof than steady weather. Sun bakes the oils out of asphalt and hardens every rubber and sealant component until it cracks, and the failures sit there unnoticed through the dry months because nothing is testing them. Then the first real atmospheric river arrives and finds all of them at once, which is why leak calls across Los Angeles County cluster into a few weeks each winter. Low-slope and flat sections are the particular weak point here — they are everywhere in the local housing stock, they pond rather than shed, and their membranes are exactly what the UV has been degrading.
Duarte has a population of about 21,727, and the housing stock here sets the pattern for what fails first on a roof.
Both present almost identically. Flashing leaks usually show at ceiling level where the stack passes through; masonry leaks often show lower, on the breast itself, and worsen with wind-driven rain from a particular direction. Checking both before working on either saves repeating the job.
More so, arguably. An open flue on a disused stack takes rain straight into the structure with nothing drawing it back out, so the masonry stays wet and deteriorates faster than one in use.
